Ideas and Bluegill Flies Reviews - FAQ and Questions
- Is a spin cast with bait or fly set up more effective to catch large bluegill ?
I'm going fishing for bluegill and I want to beat my PR of 8oz. I was wondering if fly fishing or fishing with bait will be more effective in catching the larger bluegill , if fly fishing .. What flys should I tie on? If spin casting with bait what bait works the best between crickets and red worms or if you know of something even better. I live in Southern California and its been in the 80s for the passed week or so , so I'm sure there biting cause a few weeks ago I caught the 8oz fish when it was a little colder. Thanks!
A During the day, In Southern Oregon, for the big Blue Gill around 1 pound or bigger, we use meal worms fished about a foot off the bottom. If you fish near the surface with a bobber, you catch only small ones. Just before sun down, we also troll for them using a chartreuse wiggle tail jig with a split shot to hold it about 18 inches under water.

A Both can work quite well. It really depends on what type fishing you prefer... Personally, I've had more luck using live bait on a hook and bobber, than with anything else...and crickets specifically, for the largest sizes and amounts of bluegill, as well as other varieties of perch... And, I prefer using ultra-light spinning tackle and cricket hooks for this..... But, it's all personal choice.
